Why do Reddit videos download without sound?
Reddit stores uploaded videos on v.redd.it as two separate streams: the picture in one file, the audio in another. Your browser combines them as it plays, but many online downloaders and extensions grab only the video stream, which is why you end up with a silent MP4. Top Video Downloader downloads both streams and joins them with its bundled ffmpeg, so the file has sound with no extra steps.
If the merged file is still silent, play the post in a browser: some Reddit clips, such as former GIFs and screen recordings, never had an audio track. No downloader can add sound that isn't in the source.

Which Reddit links work?
reddit.com/r/community/comments/abc123/title/: the full post link, the most reliable option.old.reddit.com/r/…/comments/…: the same post in the old interface.redd.it/abc123: the short post link.v.redd.it/…: a direct link to Reddit's video file.reddit.com/r/community/s/…share links from the mobile app: if one fails, open it in a browser and copy the full post address.
A post that only points to YouTube, Streamable or another site is a link, not a Reddit video. Paste the address of the video itself: YouTube has its own guide, and other platforms are listed under other sites.
What you get from different Reddit posts
| Post type | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Video uploaded to Reddit | MP4 with sound | Heights as stored by Reddit; 720p and lower is free |
| Silent video (former GIFs) | MP4 without sound | The post itself has no audio track |
| Just the sound of a video | MP3 or another format | Audio only; free within the quota |
| Image or gallery | Not downloaded | The app saves video and audio, not images |
| Link to another site | Depends on the site | Paste the link to the video itself |
Reddit video won't download? Here's what to do
- "Sign-in required". The post is marked NSFW, sits in a private community, or was pulled from public view. Go to Platform logins → Reddit → Log in, then Save login. The login window opens Reddit's own site, and cookies stay encrypted on your computer.
- "Rate limited". Reddit caps how often one address can make requests. Wait a few minutes, lower "Downloads at once" in Settings → Network, and try again.
- HTTP 403 or "blocked by network security". Reddit rejects requests disguised as a browser, so the app approaches it the plain way first. If the error persists, a VPN or shared network address is the usual cause; try without the VPN.
- "Unavailable". The post was deleted by its author or the moderators. Check the link in a browser.
- "No downloadable video or audio was found at this link". The post has no video: it's text, an image or an outside link.

Online Reddit downloader vs a desktop app
Online Reddit downloaders are fine for one clip on someone else's computer, but some return video without sound, and the rest come with ads and one file at a time. The desktop app always merges the audio, downloads several posts in parallel (three by default, 1 to 5 in Settings), and sends nothing through a third-party server: the video goes from Reddit straight to your disk. More in online downloader vs desktop app.
Videos on Reddit belong to the people who posted them. Only download what you have the right to, and follow Reddit's rules. More in is it legal to download videos.
How do I download a Reddit video with sound?
Paste the post link into Top Video Downloader, pick a quality and click Add to queue. Reddit keeps the picture and the audio apart, so the app downloads both streams and merges them into one MP4 with the bundled ffmpeg. You don't need to install ffmpeg yourself; it comes with the installer.
Why is my downloaded Reddit video silent?
Usually because the tool took only the video stream from v.redd.it, while the audio sits next to it as a separate file. Top Video Downloader fetches both. If its file is silent too, the original post has no sound, which is common with former GIFs and screen recordings. Play the post in a browser to check.
Do I need a Reddit account to download videos?
Not for regular public posts; the link is enough. You need to log in for NSFW posts and private communities you belong to. Do it under Platform logins. The cookies are encrypted on your computer and are never sent to our server.
Is there a free Reddit video downloader for PC?
Yes. Without an account, Top Video Downloader gives you 3 trial downloads; a free account gets 10 downloads a day at up to 720p. 1080p takes 1 credit or a subscription. Audio-only downloads also count toward the free daily quota.
How do I convert a Reddit video to MP3?
Tick Audio only in the quality window. You get an MP3 by default; in Settings you can pick M4A, Opus, FLAC or WAV and a bitrate from 128 to 320 kbps. The post title is written into the file tags by default.
Can I download Reddit videos on my phone?
Top Video Downloader is a desktop app for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon and Linux x86-64; there is no mobile version yet. For what works on a phone today and how to join the waitlist, see video downloading on mobile.
