How to download X (Twitter) videos on PC
Updated October 7, 2026 · tested with version 2.0.0
Top Video Downloader saves videos and GIFs from X (formerly Twitter) posts to your PC as MP4, or just the audio as MP3. X serves only some public videos without a login, so for most posts you sign in to X once inside the app. The login is encrypted, stays on your computer and never reaches our servers.
- X login
- Needed for most posts; some public videos work without it
- Links
- x.com and twitter.com, treated as the same site
- Quality
- The sizes X stores for the video; landscape 720p is free
- Formats
- MP4 (GIFs too); audio as MP3, M4A, Opus, FLAC or WAV
- Free plan
- 3 trial downloads without an account, then 10 a day up to 720p
Do you need to log in to download X videos?
Usually, yes. X shows less and less to logged-out visitors, and many posts don't open without an account even in a browser. Our daily check downloads a public broadcast recording (x.com/i/broadcasts/…) without a login, but a regular post with a video normally needs an account, and the app then says "Sign-in required". That's why X (Twitter) sits in the Account required group of Platform logins. Signing in takes a minute:
- 1
Click Platform logins on the main screen, then Log in next to X (Twitter).
- 2
Sign in on the x.com page that opens inside the app, and pass X's check if it shows one.
- 3
Click Save login. X now shows a green Logged in badge.
The app never stores your password. It keeps only the session cookies, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, with the key in Windows Credential Manager, the macOS Keychain or Secret Service on Linux. Those cookies are never sent to our servers, and Log out deletes them.

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Send the link to yourself to open it on your computer, or join the waitlist for a phone version.
X and Twitter link formats
x.com/username/status/…: a post with a video or GIF. The main format.twitter.com/username/status/…: the old address of the same post. Works the same, and your login applies.x.com/i/broadcasts/…: a broadcast recording. This is the link our daily check tests.t.co/…: X's link shortener. Open it in a browser first and copy the x.com address it lands on.
Why the extra step for t.co? The app attaches your login only to x.com and twitter.com links. It doesn't recognise a t.co link as X, so it would try without your login and most likely be refused.
How to download GIFs from Twitter
Twitter "GIFs" are really short silent videos. Paste the post link the same way as for a video and you get an MP4. It is smaller than a real GIF and plays in any video player. If you need an actual .gif file, convert the MP4 in any editor.
X video quality and what's free
X keeps each video in several sizes, and the app lists them by frame height. A free account gets 10 downloads a day up to 720p, counted by height: a landscape 1280×720 clip is free, while a vertical 720×1280 one is 1280 pixels tall and costs 1 credit. 1080p and 4K cost the same single credit. Audio only is always free, which is handy for podcasts and music clips. See pricing for credits and the lifetime plan.
X video not downloading? Fixes
- "Sign-in required" with a saved login: your X session ended. Click Re-login in Platform logins. The app also drops stale cookies and retries on its own.
- Posts marked as sensitive content: X serves them only to logged-in accounts, and you may also need to allow sensitive media in your X settings.
- Protected account: you can only download posts your account can see, which means you follow it.
- "Rate limited": X is throttling requests. The app waits and retries; if it still fails, try later.
- "Unavailable": the post was deleted or is withheld in your country. Check the link in a browser with the same account.
Daily platform results are on the status page. The app is for computers only (Windows 10/11, Apple Silicon Macs, 64-bit Linux); for phones see mobile options.
Can I download X videos without an account?
Sometimes. X serves some public videos and broadcast recordings to logged-out visitors, but most posts need an account and the app shows "Sign-in required". Sign in once under Platform logins; the login is stored encrypted only on your computer, and you won't have to repeat it for each download.
Do old twitter.com links still work?
Yes. The app treats twitter.com and x.com as one site and applies your saved login to both. Only the t.co shortener needs an extra step: open the t.co link in a browser, wait for the x.com address and copy that instead.
How do I save a GIF from Twitter?
Paste the post link as you would for a video. X stores GIFs as silent videos, so you get an MP4 that is lighter than a real GIF and plays in any player or chat app. If you need the .gif format itself, convert the MP4 in an image editor or an online converter.
Can I download only the audio from an X video?
Yes, choose Audio only. MP3 is the default, and Settings offers M4A, Opus, FLAC or WAV at 128–320 kbps or best VBR. Audio downloads are free within the 10 daily downloads and never use a credit, whatever the quality of the original video.
Is it safe to log in to X inside a downloader?
You type your password on x.com itself, and the app keeps only session cookies, encrypted with AES-256-GCM and keyed through your system's keystore. They never leave your computer for our servers. Log out removes them, and you can also end the session from X's security settings.
Is it legal to download videos from Twitter?
Keeping a personal copy of something you have the right to use is generally fine. Re-uploading someone else's video without permission breaks copyright and X's rules. That applies even when the post is public. Read is it legal to download videos before saving other people's posts.
